Second match of the day saw us square off against Barker Boys in what waould be the first part of a double-header. Match got off to a promising start with both teams looking to seize the initiative.
Squad rotation saw Darius put in a shift in goal, combining well with his defence to repel attack after attack from Barker Boys. Nazhan put in a spirited performance for us upfront, chasing down passes and working hard to provide support. There were chances on both ends, with both sets of players working really hard to get their noses in front. But a lapse in concentration let Barker Boys in to score the decisive goal late on.
Good team effort, but we weren't able to keep Barker Boys out in this one.
In stark contrast from the dark clouds and rain in the morning, Today’s matches were played under the scorching sun. To compound the challenge further, the team was far from full strength. We had all but 1 substitute available for today’s matches. Last but not least, we also had to bring in a caretaker coach as the regular one wasn't available. Today was going to be a challenge.
Playing a 3-2-1 formation, both the left and right backs were given the freedom to run the flanks and support the midfield. This strategy worked out well as we were able to control the game in the middle of the park snuffing out attacks by F-17. In addition, we used the control of the midfield to launch attack after attack. A series of bodies, intervention by the F-17 goalkeeper and wayward shooting by our boys kept the score level at 0-0. Finally, an attack initiated by Daryle was followed up with a scorcher by Marc from outside the penalty box that struck the underside of the bar and looked to have bounced past the goal line before spinning out! Although a goal was not given for Marc’s effort, Elliot with his striker’s instinct put the goal beyond doubt when he latched onto the loose ball and slotted it home.
Spurred on by the goal, the boys pushed hard but just could not crack F-17’s stout defending another time. The game ended with the boys victors with the solitary goal.
For his outstanding performance in an unfamiliar role of Right Back, Man of the Match goes to Ian Neo.
