YG2k 's Match Report
Both teams started this match day undefeated. Having to face each other in back-to-back matches in this match day, with the season coming to a close soon, the 6 points swinging either way would be the decider on which team would be lifting the championship trophy at the end of November.
With an encouraging pre-match rally and tactical talk by Coach, the boys are all hyped up for the challenge ahead.
Team YG2K, beaming with confidence inspired by Coach’s words, flowed forward from a two-man back line of Ridwan and Izzy, looked lively from the outset.
But F-17 Lions were organised and compact , and they played with great energy and intensity. There were great action between the two teams to gain control in the middle. As a result, the early part of the game unfolded as something of a slog with our boys perhaps getting slightly more possession, but creating few good scoring chances with it.
Mohamed scooped a half-volley wide when Ridwan lobbed a pass over F-17 defence line and subsequently, Mohamed’s header was well blocked by a defender on the line when he connected with Ridwan’s long throw-in minutes later with the F-17 on the back foot during the early skirmishes.
F-17 fought back. They did very well in some dead-ball situation to pressurize our defence. Our boys were fast to close up but the F-17 boys did manage to squeeze out a shot past the defenders , only to see Travis did a wonderful reflex stop using his leg.
Despite F-17’s pressure, Mohamed continued to pose threats on their defence. On 2 separate occasion, he managed to chase down long passes and forces good saves from their keeper.
With the clock winding down, F-17 Lions was presented the best chance to break the deadlock when Ridwan missed a clearance. The ball bounced to the lurking F-17 striker. His shot went wide but hit the retreating Ridwan towards the goal, beating Travis but was blocked by the frame of the goal. The on-rushing striker was the quickest to reach the rebound but his shot was too high and went out to the relief of the YG2K boys and supporters.
The miss was the turning point of the game. From the resultant goal kick after the miss, Travis’ deep goal kick pass picked up Jonan’s run and he left the defenders trailing. One of the defenders did manage to recover and both players tangled to tussle for the ball. Perhaps it took a fortunate bounce , or maybe it was the “winner” mentality that Coach emphasised in the pre-match talk , that gave Jonan that extra determination to simply refuse to go down against the stronger and bigger boy, he managed to win the tussle and pushed forward to the far left towards the byline. Despite the ever-tightening angle, his shot flashed across the keeper to smack the far post into the net.
A wonderful game winning goal by the youngest player on the pitch.
Final score : 1-0
