GFA Japan 's Match Report

Barker Boys 's Match Report

The second match of the weekend vs GFA Japan. Expected plenty of hardworking, determination and non-stop running from our opponents and true to form, they lived up to expectations.

We started off with Valentin between the posts, Wei Jian and Shachin at the back, Ryan, Damien and Aiman in the middle, and Aiman at the front.

Typical of the Boys, they started off the second match at a faster and brighter pace. Within the first couple of minutes, they were able to fashion a couple of chances from the left.

Then, following a midfield tussle, Damien managed to slip the ball to Issac who was coming through the middle. He still had plenty to do, but rode a couple of late challenges before shooting the ball past the opponent’s keeper to secure an early 1-0 lead for the Boys.

Unfortunately, Issac had to go off soon after, following a heavy challenge from a defender when he was almost through on goal for a second time. Marc replaced him in the right wing and continued to torment and raid down the right wing in his customary fashion.

Quickly settling into their rhythm, the Boys kept their opponents at bay.

In the 11th minute, the post saved the Boys from conceding a goal. A quick counter-attack left the Boys exposed at the back, and with just the keeper to beat, the opposing forward shot was deflected against the post by Russell. A big let-off for the Boys.

Undaunted, the Japanese team continued and created a couple of dangerous moves which were comfortably dealt with by Shachin and Wei Jian putting in timely interceptions. However, both defenders had to be quick on their toes and stay focussed as their opponents kept moving and pushing for the equalizer.

Then, in the 18th minute, another error at the back resulted in the equalizer. Another back-pass to the keeper was under-hit and easily intercepted by the opponent’s striker. Russell had no chance to save, and suddenly GFA Japan were back in the game.

This time, it was the signal for the Boys to throw everything forward.

Mikhail replaced Ryan to provide more steel in the middle, and Felix came on for a tiring Marc.

Valens was also brought on, replacing Wei Jian as the Boys chased for a second goal.

Pushing upwards with a more aggressive forward line, the Boys fashioned a series of chances but somehow just could not score. Damien, AIman and Felix all coming close but not able to convert. The goal-keeper also did well, holding unto the ball and saving well in several instances.

Finally, with just 2 minutes of play, Aiman produced his second moment of magic this weekend. Through sheer determination and persistence, the Boys forced a rare moment of error from the GFA Japan defenders. The ball was robbed on the left side of their defence by Aiman, a quick switch of feet was followed by a shot into goal and finally the Boys were back in the lead.

The game finished off with the Boys continuing to create chances but were unable to add to the score.

The final whistle came shortly after, giving another narrow 2-1 win for the Barker Boys.

To summarise the weekend’s performance, both goals conceded were preventable. Our Boys need to improve on their close control of the ball, especially in a small size pitch where there is little room for error when playing at the back. Also, the decision-making process can be improved and if possible, keep play on the ground and look for the incisive through-ball passes to unhinge the opponent’s defence.

Man of the Match award goes to Wei Jian for good defending at the back, keeping the opponents out on the right away from goal and being composed on the ball to build from the back, supporting the right side players.
