The first of three matches this weekend saw the Boys pit their wits against a strong and organized Espzen Sunday team.
Valens and Wei Jian started at the back with Valentin between the posts. Mikhail, Marc and Damien were tasked to take charge of the midfield with Aiman at the front.
Right from the kick-off, the Boys were put under pressure as their opponents sought for an early goal. The defenders didn’t help matters by making a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes with misplaced or under hit passes. Fortunately, their opponents were unable to take advantage of this and slowly the Boys began to find their way back into the game.
A move down the right by Marc ended with Aiman shooting narrowly past the post. Almost immediately, Espzen counterattacked and Valentin was called upon to make a save.
Damien began to stamp his mark in the middle, spinning and beating his opponent once with the shot going past the post again. Then in the 11th minute, spotting the keeper off his line, Damien tried to chip the keeper from outside the penalty area which bounced off the right post of the goal.
The scoreline continued to remain scoreless as both teams fought to gain an advantage.
Keeping in mind the matches to come later, Felix replaced Marc on the right. A move which almost paid dividends several minutes later as Felix broke through the right, squared the ball to Aiman in front of the goal. This time, Aiman was unable to keep the ball down as he blasted the ball over the crossbar.
Then it was Mikhail’s turn to have a go from the middle, but the keeper was able to save his shot.
Finally, on the 16th minute, the Boys finally broke through. Another attack, this time down the left by Aiman broke through the Espzen defence. He slipped a short pass to Damien who made no mistake with a crisp shot to the keeper’s left post, and the Boys led 1-0.
Through it all, the Boys defenders held firm. Long balls into the Boys defence were adequately dealt with by Valens as he and Wei Jian marshalled and kept the Espzen forwards at bay.
As the clock ticked towards the end, Shachin was brought on in place of a tiring Mikhail to further bolster the backline and keep the opponents forwards in check.
The game ended with a narrow 1-0 win for the Boys.
MOTM award goes to Valens, who showed good defensive work in managing the long ball from the opponents and also protecting the space at the back.
