The team were determined to reverse the previous loss against them for the first game. Both team had chances but thanks to steady goalkeeping by Eron and good team defending, we managed to keep opponents at bay and preserve our slender lead. Jayden got his first goal for the tournament. The opponent GK was probably caught by surprise to concede the soft goal. But Jayden was determined to chase the overpass ball from Jeric and use Jeric as decoy to shoot instead. So the goal is credited to Jayden for his effort.
Overall the team defended very well and keep trying and never give up. Thumbs up for the compliment of "resilience" from Baker Boys coach. It applies to Baker Boys as well who keep trying to play good and sporting game despite trailing. The kind of character that should be instilled for kids/youth games.
But tough luck for the opponent GK while our GK is on form to maintain clean sheet for the game. Thus MOTM for Eron.
The Boys started off with Valentin in goal, Wei Jian and Valens at the back, Marc, Damien and Ryan in the middle with Mikhail at the tip.
Unusually for the Boys, they started off slow and took time to get into their stride. This allowed their opponents to dictate the pace and as early as the 7th minute, they had a chance to shoot from distance only for the ball to hit the crossbar.
Damien was then through on goal following a nice pass from Marc, but could only hit the side following a last ditch block from the Cubs defenders.
Then following a long kick, the Cubs managed to break down the right wing, and following a cross from the right, the keeper accidently spilled the ball from his grasp and somehow sneaked under his body to roll into the goal. Unfortunate, but the goal still counts and the Boys were down 1-0.
Undeterred, the Boys continued to fight on and attempt to level the game.
Mid-way through the game, and the coach introduced substitutions, On came Shachin, Felix, and Aiman to replace Wei Jian, Marc and Ryan.
The changes did not however affect much of the play as possession and control continued to stay with the Barker Boys. However, the opponents showed dogged defending. There were several occasions when the Boys broke through with Damien through the middle, or Aiman and Felix down the flanks, but just could not finish off the final ball.
Again, as in the previous match, the goal keeper was in good form, keeping out several attempts at goal to preserve their 1-0 lead.
As the game progressed towards the end, the Boys continued to attack with fervour, winning several corners towards the end of the game but to no avail.
The game finished 1-0 to the Cubs.
This was a good effort overall. They played with their hearts out and did not give up. With a bit more improvement in their finishing the score might be a bit different.
Man of the match award goes to Damien, who played well in the middle, initiating several moves forward as well as getting into good shooting positions.
