Another exciting encounter between two very good teams. Turf City enjoyed a classic match that had everything….. except VAR!
This match was always going to be competitive after ESPZEN won the previous game 3-1. With the weather conditions perfect for football both teams started strong. ESPZEN took an early lead when Nathan’s free kick was flicked in to the goal by Nils who was in front of the goalkeeper (referee version not mine!). It was 2-0 six minutes later when a lovely corner from Kyra was headed into the ground by Nils and with the surface fast and greasy the ball flew into the top corner. ESPZEN were in dream land 10 minutes later when the lively Nils took the ball off the defender, went through 1v1 and calmly dispatched the ball into the bottom corner.
Dream Land turned into a nightmare within a few minutes when Superb Juniors produced a stunning comeback, showing a never say die spirit. If it wasn’t for the brilliance of Leo ESPZEN would’ve been losing at half time but instead we went into the break at 3-2 up.
The 2nd half started brightly for ESPZEN, they were composed on the ball but then disaster struck as Superb Juniors struck twice to take a 4-3 lead. Then the air was taken out of ESPZEN’s sails, SJ scored a 5th and with that control of the game. Nils continue his fine performance with a 4th goal of the game but was too late for a shellshocked ESPZEN.
Credit must go to Superb Juniors for a stunning comeback, driven on by there passionate parents. They showed courage and desire to fight back from 3 goals down. ESPZEN will learn from this performance and it will make the players stronger in the long run. Playing under pressure is part of football and can be very difficult. The players showed there own desire though by getting back to 5-4, if they’d been a few more minutes of the game then chances are it would’ve been 5-5!
It’s a great learning curve for the players and I’m sure they will bounce back next weekend.
Jake who was captain for the day gave the player of the match to Robbie for his continued work rate and desire. Well done Robbie
Last game for Super b Juniors (SJR) of the season and what a game. Shades of Liverpool's Miracle in Istanbul of 2005, a 'ghost' goal, feverish supporters at pitch side and thunder and lightning (literally)!
Espzen were quicker off the blocks from the whistle. First goal came via a freekick. Coaches from both teams agreed that no player had touched the ball but referee stood firm and awarded the goal. 1 nil to Espzen.
Their second goal game via a corner kick where the ball was meet beautifully for a downward header leaving SJR keeper with no chance. The third goal came in a 1 on 1 situation when the Espzen striker robbed the defender of the ball and cooly slotted the ball. 3-0 in 7 minutes!....game over?
No YNWA anthems but shouts of 'cmon boys!'..'keep your heads up!'...'you can do it' can be heard pitch side. Kudos to the SJR players for digging in deep and believing in themselves. 1st goal started from the back. Aniq GK passed the ball to Matin who hoofed the ball to Aniq to race thru for a quick cross to Vivek. Alas an Espzen player managed to clear the danger. Ball was recyled by Adrian Danish to Adly on the left flank who crossed over for Vivek to control the ball pass his marker and deftly flick it into goal! 3-1! Rising....??
Aniq then won the ball in midfield and relayed it to Adam who tried to slide it pass to Vivek. Ball was intercepted and hoofed away and again recyled by Adrian Danish to Adam who tricked 2 players with a turn. Adam passed the ball to Adly and ran for the return pass, controlled it and slammed it past the Espzen GK. 3-2.....is the comeback on?
High pressing was the mantra and when Vishal intercepted a goal kick from the GK, he quickly passed the ball to ALong but again the Espzen defense was alert to the danger and cleared their lines but only as far as Adam who played a 1-2 with Vishal and shot a stiff grounder towards goal....a good stop by the Espzen GK ( who seems to have the ball glued to his gloves from every shot!) but the ball squirmed underneath him and Ikmal, one of the smallest on the pitch, was on hand to slot the ball home at the far post. 3-3! Comeback completed?
Not satisfied with a draw, SJR boys decided to go for broke. Ikmal won a free kick. Up stepped Adam who sweetly struck the ball towards the Espzen goal. (All free kicks are indirect and unless a player touches the ball, its a no goal). The ball touched the head of an Espzen player and out of the GK reach. 4-3! Cue pandemonium from the pitch!! The End...?
The team topscorer Ikmal had the last say. With his own hardwork, he kept pressing the backline until he intercepted a poor pass and finished it off to make it 5-3. But wait! Espzen are not done yet and added a fourth goal to make the scoreline 5-4. Referee blew the final whistle and the SJR boys celebrated a win that will forever be etched in their memories.
In this last game ALL the boys contributed to the comeback. Despite letting in 3 goals, Aniq Matin was still safe as he produced save after save to keep the boys in the game. Matin ran and ran in defense until he could no longer run and had to be substituted. Nyqil played way beyond his age and surprised people that he was only 10. Vivek scored the first goal of the comeback and worked hard to win the ball. Adly had 2 assists on the day and will gain a lot of confidence from this display. Adrian Danish the team speedster played on both sides of the flank and also as an emergency right back. He is also 10 and played well above his age. Along was his usual irritating self. Never giving the opponents a moment rest with his constant pressing and pressure. Aniq who is just coming back to full fitness played one of his best games, having a hand in two of the goals playing in right mid. Faiyaz played as a striker in the opening minutes and as usual gave 110%. He played in defense later in the game to add steel to the backline. Vishal had a quiet game BUT that was due to him concentrating on tracking back whenever the team was under attack to help the defense which he did superbly. Adam came on in midfield and started to boss the midfield. Scoring 1 and having a hand in 2 goals and always encouraging the team on. Ikmal the flair player caused a lot of problems on the flanks and repeatedly showed his bag of tricks with his flicks and stepovers.
A wonderful advert of the game from both teams but there had to be only one winner. Good luck to Espzen for their final two matches and we shall see where the next adventure takes the Superb Junior boys on their learning journey in football. #weplaytoentertain #JCOEboys #Ashboys
