The rain has died down for the 2nd match against the Black team and the boys were raring to go and to put their earlier defeat (last month) by the same team behind them. The coach plan was to start pressing the game high into the Black's half and to give them no time on the ball. The plan appears to work as the boys were able to pin the Black team in their own half and in so doing, created a number of goal scoring opportunities within the first 10 minutes. Nishanth had a glorious chance to open the scoring when he side foot his shot wide with only the goalie to beat. Max also had his shot turned away for a corner by the goalie. Finally, Matthew shot over with only the goalie to beat.
The only goal of the match came early (in the 4th minute). An in-swinging corner by Kayden was only half-cleared to Gideon. Gideon instinctive shot towards goal somehow landed on Nishanth’s feet right in front of goal and Nishanth make no mistake this time and fired the shot past the stranded goalie for the only goal. The early goal only spurred the Black team into action and they created several good chances but our defensive line of Gideon and Wayne did extremely well each time to clear the danger. In total, the Black team have at least 5 shots on target and Ethan was excellent in goal palming the ball away for a corner each time. Max also got into the action too when one of the shot was heading towards goal until his timely intervention with his head!
We had our chances too with some of the best chances falling on Kayden’s feet. His indirect free kick from a Nishanth’s lay-off beat the 2 man wall and the out-stretched hands of the Black’s goalie and only the timely header by John on the goal-line prevented goal number 2. Kayden also have 3 other golden opportunities to add to his goal tally. First, he was put free on the left by a Nishanth’s through ball and his shot was wonderfully saved by the goalie. He collected the rebound and his cross should have been put away by Max but somehow the ball spurned in front of goal before being cleared. He also had his shot on the left saved brilliantly by the goalie after good work by Max and Nishanth. Finally, in the final minutes of the game, his goal bound shot was denied by the left post after a nice cross by Matthew on the right.
Overall an entertaining and pulsating match…never a dull moment. All credits to the Black team who took the game to us especially after the early goal. The boys performed extremely well and stuck to the game plan of not yielding any space for the Black team to play their usual passing game. In fact this is the first time this season that the Black team did not score in a match. Everybody played their part... Ethan was excellent in goal, the defensive line of Gideon and Wayne was water-tight, the midfield quartet of Max, Kayden, Sam and Matthew ran their heart-out in defense and in attack and Nishanth was tireless upfront but most importantly, his only goal separated the 2 teams. Picking the Man-of-the-Match for this game is difficult as all the boys deserve the award but there can only be one and the coach award the Man-of-the-Match to Gideon for marshalling the defense well.
With 3-4 remaining matches to go and 1-2 points separating the top 3 teams, this season is likely to go down to the wire.
Another superb game of football, and dissappointed we were not able to capture this game on the Tower Cam (as the camcorder is under repair) nevertheless both teams played some great football moving the ball quickly from defense to attack.
Missing 2 out of 3 centre backs meant Kristoff played with different partners throughout the game which was a great experience for players stepping in at the back and alsof for young Kirs to expeirence working with new players.
Barker Boys restricted us to just 97 passes of which 37 were unsuccessful - a pass completion rate of only 61% which was our lowest of the season thus far... and credit is given to BB for their high tempo pressing game.
We managed 5 shots on target and one off target, but alas Ethan in goal for BB made some outstanding saves (as did Kai in goal for the Black team) and it was a day for both teams that the keepers were the shining star.
For the black team, when under pressure we need to be confident with the ball, make decisions faster, and supporting players off the ball need to move that little bit quicker....
Captain Kai awarded MotM to Locke for some solid tackles and making some intelligent passes, one of which was a wonderful thru ball from centre midfield to young ryan on the left which truly split open the BB defense, alas slighty over weight and no chance created, however the intelligence and the vision of the pass - was a real highlight from this game. Well done Locke
