Barker Boys 's Match Report

The boys were on a high after the comfortable 3-0 win earlier in the day and they came out strongly against Football Plus.  The first goal came within the 1st minute when a Henry’s free kick was cleared by the defender.  Football Plus counter-attack was quickly stopped by Wayne and Wayne turned defence into attack when he laid the ball to Nishanth in the middle of the field.  Nishanth took the ball and ran down the right flank.  He managed to cross a low ball to the penalty box.  The Football Plus defenders thinking that the ball has gone out for a goal-kick stood rooted to their positions and Kayden sensing the opprtunity, came from the blind side to force the ball into the back of the net (with some help from the defender) for 1-0.

For the next 15 minutes, the boys controlled the game and restricted Football Plus to counter-attacks and 1 shot at goal.  The Football Plus goalie was in top form and he denied both Max and Nishanth from scoring.  Max had a great header from a Kayden’s corner saved by the goalie.

Football Plus scored with their 2nd shot on goal when their striker unleashed a low shot that went under Ethan body in the 16th minute for 1-All.  The response from our boys were almost immediate when from a short corner, the ball was laid off to Nishanth whose shot from 10m hit the underside of the bar and eventually cleared by the goalie.

More shots rained on the Football Plus goal from Max, Nishanth, Sam and Henry but they were either wide or saved by the goalie.  Our breakthrough eventually came in the 29th minute from Henry who controlled a goal kick from the Football Plus goalie.  He released the ball to Nishanth in the opponent’s half.  Nishanth saw Max free on his right and passed the ball to him.  Max still have a lot to do and he twisted and turned 2 defenders before placing the goal beyond the reach of the goalie for 2-1.

Defending a 2-1 lead was never going to be easy especially when Football Plus were dangerous on the counter-attacks.  They eventually equalized in the last minute of play from a throw-in that found their midfielder in hectares of space and he took a long hoping shot towards goal.  Ethan, perhaps unsighted, could only parry the ball into the path of the on-rushing striker and despite Max trying to “unbalance” the striker, he made no mistake in tapping the ball into the goal for 2-2.

There was still enough time for more dramas to unfold when Henry’s indirect free kick was judged to have not touch a player on its way into the goal.  Max also has the ball in the net but the central whistle and the referee have already blown for the end of the match as Max was about to shoot.

All in all perhaps a disappointing result for the boys as they have 16 shots on goal (7 on target).  But all credit to Football Plus who took their chances well and their goalie was in top form to deny us from scoring more goals.  The coach awards the Man of the Match to Max.
