Barker Boys 's Match Report
After a 3 week break for exams preparation, the Boys were back in action on this warm and sunny Sunday.
The coach put out the same starting lineup with 2 defenders, 3 midfielders and 2 forwards, with instructions to pass the ball around and spread the play.
It didn't take long for the players to get into their stride and within the first 5 minutes, the Boys were 4-0 up, courtesy of goals from Damien, Aiman and Felix (2). Ryan managed to add another one a couple of minutes later to make it 5-0.
At that point however, the opponents began to settle down, and began to play their way back into the game. An attempt to move forward by the Boys broke down, and in a quick counterattack, the opponents managed to break through and score a goal of their own.
Feeling the heat from the afternoon sun, the coach decided to substitute several players for fresh legs to maintain the momentum and also to conserve energy for the rest of the match. This strategy paid off as the team managed to score another 3 more goals before the half time whistle. There were several more chances to add to the scoreline but a combination of wayward finishing and decent goalkeeping by the opponents kept the score at 8-1.
In the second half, the coach decided to mix things up a bit. Defenders were put into forward positions, midfielders and strikers were played in defensive roles. This was to spread the play around, and also enable all the players to know and experience what it is to play in a different position. Possibly as a result of this, the second half was a more balanced and keen fought affair.
Again, most of the play was focused and directed towards the wings with the plan to stretch the opponent defenders across the field.
This strategy seems to have paid off well too, with defenders like Dan and Wei Jian getting in amongst the goals during the second half, either through a combination of sheer determination to "get the ball", or finishing off moves created by the wingers.
The final goal was scored by Aiman towards the end by a combination of sheer determination, skill and will power to first win the ball back, then turning and twisting his way around 3 defenders before finally finishing off with a well taken goal.
Man of the match award goes to Marc Tan for his overall contribution towards the team, and some good decision making whilst on/off the ball.
Overall, another good weekend for the Boys. More goals scored, and equally as important, there was a better sense that the Boys are playing together as a team.
Saturday Strikers 's Match Report
Both teams participated in an enjoyable match, even though the Barker Boys came away with a convincing victory. The Strikers were proud of the fact their heads never went down, proud to have fought until the end, and proud to keep their spirit strong. The Barker Boys also deserve a special mention for the humility in which they won the game.
